SHARE THE LOVE…downsize AND help Syrian refugees!

The Divas are thrilled to present this Guest Blog from our pals at Furniture Bank:

The Government of Canada has committed to resettling 25,000 Syrian refugees. As of January 2016, more than 13,500 Syrian refugees have already arrived and, to date, 5,500+ applications have been finalized and are awaiting flights over.

IMAGINE you are leaving a refugee camp with your family to settle in a new country with nothing more than the clothes on your back and a suitcase.

This is the REALITY many newcomer families face. With the Greater Toronto Area preparing to welcome 2,500 Syrian refugees over the next few months, Furniture Bank has partnered with Lifeline Syria and Sponsorship Agreement Holders to help the newcomer families address their immediate furniture needs. Furniture Bank has already seen a 60% increase in refugees served.

Canadians have stepped up to help in so many different ways. Sponsor groups have bonded together to support a family for their first year in Canada, grassroots initiatives have been formed to collect much-needed items such as winter clothing to distribute to families, and volunteers have donated their time and professional services to help with resettlement efforts.

Here are some ways to support Syrian refugees while downsizing or organizing your home:

1. Donate unwanted gently used furniture and housewares to Furniture Bank. Check this LIST of items Furniture Bank accepts and read about the IMPACT your donation will have on people’s lives.

2. Donate gently-used clothing to New Circles — a clothing bank that works with referring agencies to redistribute clothes to families in need. They are actively supporting Syrian refugee families in need of clothing. For more information about donating clothing to New Circles and drop off location, CLICK HERE.

3. Donate children’s items to The New Mom Project and share gently-used baby clothes and gear with families in need. They are proud to support Syrian refugee families as they begin a new life in Toronto by providing essentials such as seasonal clothing (from newborn – 4 years), diapers, wipes, small toys, cribs, strollers, and carriers. If you have these items in your home and want to donate them please e-mail
